A medical center with heart paired with a construction management firm with passion resulted in a compassionate partnership. Working together for the past five years, our relationship has developed as Structure Tone has provided construction services ranging from the installation of MRI units and other machinery, to a new pain clinic and the relocation of the Hospital’s corporate offices throughout its campus facilities. From the addition of structural supports to sustain the excessive weight of its new law library to construction of a fully integrated Cat Scan control room there is no challenge we can’t complete.
Strict Procedures for Demolition and Installation of Machinery
During the recent replacement of an MRI unit, Structure Tone’s main concern was to maintain the environment for the tenants above who perform daily surgeries. In order to make sure they were not impacted by the construction, all existing floor penetrations were filled in completely, filters were placed in all the ductwork and HEPA filters were run to the outside of the building. All work was coordinated with the surgical schedules.
Once all the preventative measures were in place, the existing room was demolished. First the steel was cut into 2ft by 1ft slices and removed from the site. Then, Structure Tone widened and built temporary walls along the corridor and removed 1,000sf of raised flooring. This was widened for the removal of the old machine and delivery of the new one.
To prepare for the new MRI unit, Structure Tone saw cut the existing slab on-grade to accommodate the unisorb installation. In order to pour the new slab, our team had to excavate and remove the earth to a depth of 30ft below the existing finished floor. Once the new unit was installed in the space, the corridor was rebuilt and the temporary walls were removed. The project was completed off hours so daily operations were not affected, making the transition from the old to the new seamless.
Infection Control Logistics Plan
It is always important when working within an occupied hospital environment to have an infection control logistics plan in place. This is especially important when removing and replacing machinery, as we were on the MRI project. Areas of focus were temporary partitions, HEPA filters, dust control, fire protection, electrical safety, and safety signage.
